CESARIA EVORA & WALDEMAR BASTOS ECHO BAHIA IN AFRICA The shared cultural mix of Portuguese melodies and West African rhythms, as well as the instruments of both cultures, result in fascinating similarities between Bahia and the former African colonies of Portugal. In 1995, the perfect timbre of Cesaria Evora captured the attention of the so-called "world music" audience as well as the music fans of Brasil with the release of her first international title. Her follow-up recordings have continued the lilting, bittersweet sound of the eponymous debut. More recent on the international scene is Waldemar Bastos, who hails from Angola. His debut album and appearances with the WOMAD festival promted praise from David Byrne and Peter Gabriel. Like Evora, his lyrics are in Portuguese and the soulfulness both his plaintive and joyous numbers speak immediately and universally. |
