INTERNATIONAL BOSSA THAT ISN"T MUZAK The jazz of North America was a prime inspiration for bossa nova, and bossa, in turn, made a huge impression on the jazz and pop worlds. Stan Getz, Charlie Byrd, Herbie Mann, Zoot Sims, and even John Coltrane were among the first jazz men hip to bossa. An affinity for Afro-Cuban sounds in the New York scene had primed the North American taste for latin-flavored sounds. Vocalists of the calibre of Ella Fitzgerald set the standard for bossa covers in the jazz world. Pop vocalist Basia has made a career of homages to Astrud Gilberto with bossa-flavored originals in English. In the post-post-modern 90's, even the punk-and-everything-else-in-the-blender crowd had a go at bossa: the Japanese-American duo Cibo Matto and neo-folkster Beck, to name two. |
