LUIZ BONFA AND BADEN POWELL BOSSA NOVA INSTRUMENTALISTS PAR EXCELLENCE Along with the percussive pianist João Donato, Luiz Bonfá was the prime inspiration to João Gilberto in the development of his guitar style. Bonfá had recorded since the early '50s. It was his songwriting collaborations with Jobim as much as his performances for which posterity will remember him. A virtuosic guitarist named Baden Powell also came to fame with songwriting collaborations. His rhythmic dexterity and expressiveness gave breath to the somewhat latent percussive potential within the samba-derived bossa nova, reflecting its African heritage. Many of his finest songs were crafted with Vinícius de Moraes. |
