MARIA BETHÂNIA NOT JUST CAETANO'S SISTER Before Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, or Gal Costa were known to the public, Maria Vianna Telles Veloso had a hit under the name of Maria Bethânia. The song was a protest, and the passion of her conviction was unquestionable. She did not take active part in the Tropicália movement, though, although her poetry and theatrical-singing performances, given barefooted, might well have been taken as generally "counter-culture". Her following of fans was modest between that first hit song in 1965 and her huge success in 1978, the LP Alibi. The covers of romantic ballads sold well enough to make her the first woman to sell a million records in Brasil. Her dusky voice and earnest passion extended popularity as a balladeer at home to performances internationally. |
